Mercury in Scorpio

by Scorpius on June 9, 2009

One thing that really surprised me while learning astrology was the Mercury behavior in the natal chart. There is something strange about natal Mercury and that is the fact that you can’t really perceive it. Mercury is your thinking mind and you’re perceiving the world with your mind. This puts a veil on your Mercury behavior. It obfuscates your efforts of understanding because you’re using the same tool for searching and for the goal of your search. It’s like using a lantern to understand light: the light is already there. What you can understand after a while is the core nature of that light. You do that mainly by comparing your own lantern with other people’s lanterns.

Mercury In Scorpio

I have Mercury in Scorpio, in the 10th House. This placements makes for a really restless and curious mind. I have always been interested in searching hidden things. I am also more ready to find out things about others than to reveal things about my self. But when I do it, I try to summarize and give tons of details.

Mercury in Scorpio makes me act really well if I have to explain difficult things. It gives me a sense of ease of not only describing things but also of perceiving them. Mercury digs deeper in the hidden and mysterious realm.

The downside of having this restless curiosity is that I also have a restless desire to know. And by restless, I mean restless: I find it difficult to take a break, to relax, to just enjoy. There is always something new that waits to be discovered, there is always something unsolved in my back rooms that waits for its turn to be lighted and there is always something distracting at the horizon.

Sometimes I love to talk just to uncover things or just by the sake of talking. In an argument, that makes me quit difficult: I always find reasons to continue until I left the argument subject dead and dried. Perhaps Mercury in Scorpio is responsible for my language ease, and I’m not talking only about spoken languages, I do know and use several programming languages, like C, PHP or Java. Of course, I get easily bored about using one of them which makes jump quite often around these technologies.

Mercury in Scorpio is also responsible for my traveling habits. Whenever I travel more than several days, my Mercury enters the scene and takes control. I find my way extremely easy regardless of the city or language, and I traveled across 4 continents already. Even when I was in Japan, my Mercury helped me get along with ease, although the discomfort of not knowing the language well was still present.

I get bored easily. And I mean, really easily, I need to find always something to do or think at, otherwise my Mercury will do something strange: will resign and will let me at the will of circumstances. It’s like telling me: use me (or better said: over use me, abuse me) or I will stop serving you.

Mercury In The 10th House

The 10th house is the house of public recognition and success. I already have there a very close conjunction between Sun, Venus and Jupiter, which basically teleported me in visible places for my entire life; I’ve always been visible, even if I tried to keep a low profile. In the 10th house, near the 11th cusp, I have my Mercury, in a dissociated conjunction with Neptune in Sagittarius. For a while, under this influence, I earned my life by talking out loud (worked in an FM radio, as an anchor man) and after that I started a web publishing company. Everything involved speaking, writing and discovering new things.

Mercury in the 10th house gave this so called commercial talent. It’s not really a talent, more like an obsession, I’m always interested about an intrinsic value of a thing or an action. I’ve always spotted new ways of making money (maybe not always hugely profitable, but innovative) and applied them. A closer conjunction with Jupiter would have made this into a fortune, which is not the case now. So far, I mean. :-)

Mercury in the 10th house made for a lot of business travel. My very first long trips were business related. And one of my core business was for more than 8 years a web portal about cars.

Another interesting earthly thing Mercury influenced by its 10th house position was my negotiating skills. I’m not the best negotiator in the world, mainly because I do like to experience both sides of a discussion, but I find my way easily and can take upon any negotiation as long as it’s a challenging one.

The downside of this placement is that the Mercury area is somehow limited by the material interest. I do love to create businesses and manage them for a while, but sometimes I feel the need for something a little bit different.

Dissociated Conjunction With Neptune In The 11th House

One final word about this conjunction between Mercury and Neptune.

Although the effects are not always strong, because the conjunction spans both a house and a sign cusp, I can feel them sometimes. This conjunction gives me both great intuition and the ability to fool myself, depending on the Neptune polarity at the moment. I can either have deep, strong intuitions, but the deceving nature of Neptune can make me sometimes manipulative or simply wrong.

Both with my self as in regard to others.
