Jupiter

sun

In astrology, Jupiter represents expansion, (traditionally) luck, optimism and justice. Where Jupiter is placed in one’s natal chart there will be growth, opportunity and “a sense of luck” (see below), there will be optimism and (often) fun times.

If badly affected, Jupiter will show the effects of exaggeration: gaining weight, going overboard, over indulging. There is an uncontrolled tendency t go over board in some way. Also, when badly affected, Jupiter will create much bigger ripples than expected. If a situation can go bad with Jupiter, it will go extremely bad.

Jupiter also rules the sense of justice and how we seek the outer balance with other people. It also shows how we express kindness and tolerance. Sometimes, the sense of pleasure and optimism may make the native lazy, or “happy-go-lucky”, knowing that he or she will always be lucky. Most of the time, the area in which Jupiter resides is “lucky”, but there are some pitfalls to that.

Traditionally speaking, astrologers associated Jupiter with luck, simply because Jupiter represents expansion. So, if Jupiter touches an area related to money, there will be growth there, no doubt about it. But that’s also true if Jupiter touches something like your ability to tell lies. It will grow as well.

So Jupiter should be regarded in a context free of “good / bad” or “luck / bad luck” couples and interpreted simply as an agent of expansion, in whatever area it touches. As such, it will give a much more accurate indication of what are will more likely grow in our lives, and where one should express moderation.

Jupiter rules the astrological sign of Sagittarius.
